Belkin TuneTalk Stereo for iPod with video

The prevailing wisdom was that the iPod was a media playback device rather than a recorder, so the release of new iPod firmware to support the first microphone - Belkin's $50 Voice Recorder (iLounge rating: B) - was a breakthrough. But as noted in our review back then, older iPods were only decent recording devices: Apple limited the iPod to recording 8KHz, 16-bit monaural WAV audio files - one minute of recording per Megabyte - which was space-consuming, low-fidelity, and as suggested by Belkin's accessory, suitable basically only for voices, and not for music.

Nearly three years later, a lot has changed. iPod 3G- and 4G-ready voice recorders are physically incompatible with fifth-generation models - a shame - but to compensate, Apple has substantially improved the latest iPods' recording abilities.

Open-wheel unity creates Rahal rivalry

The news that the Indy Racing League and Champ Car agreed in principle late yesterday to unify for the upcoming season closed a 12-year wound in open-wheel racing, and it immediately started a family feud.

It means that Bobby Rahal, co-owner of Hilliard-based Rahal Letterman Racing of the IRL, now will watch his team go against his son Graham, 19, who drives for Champ Car's four-time reigning champion, the Newman-Haas-Lanigan team.

"Let's put it this way: It could be tough for me," Bobby Rahal said, laughing. "You don't want to beat your son, but then again, you want your team to do well and win. … But at least one thing nice for me is I will get to see him race every weekend."

The elder Rahal said he's just glad to see the 12-year schism in the rearview mirror.

Greens split over roads vs. rails measure

The single-occupancy vehicle drivers need to pay for roads through tolls. If we want to get people out of their cars, we need to quit subsidizing them. The trucks that spew pollution and chew up the roads need to be paying their fair share, too. They say that they pay lots of taxes, but not enough to cover the REAL costs. Why should I pay MORE in taxes while working to cut my driving to almost nothing? Why am I now DOUBLE TAXED for my Flexcar membership, which is helping me cut my miles driven? How about tolls that not only pay ALL the expenses of roads, but additionally support mass transit and bicycle commuting options? And while we're at it, how about traffic laws, new, SAFE bike lanes, and facilities to encourage bicycle commuting--which is about the most eco friendly and efficient way to move people known to man?

2008 Geneva Motor Show: World Debut of Rinspeed sQuba, First Underwater Car - GREAT FUN VIDEO

ZUMIKON, Switzerland - February 14, 2008: "Dive it again, James!" If the situation gets too hot for the secret agent he'll go underground - or under water. So demonstrated impressively by Roger Moore in 'The Spy Who Loved Me" in 1977 when he dove below the waves in a sleek vehicle that moments before seemed to be an ordinary car. The only problem: The scene never really took place; it was an animation.

With the "sQuba," the world's first real submersible car, the movie fake now becomes reality for visitors of the Geneva Motor Show (March 6th - 16th, 2008). Rinspeed boss Frank M. Rinderknecht (52) is known for his extraordinary automotive creations. The acknowledged James Bond enthusiast and Swiss automobile visionary kept revisiting this scene in his mind over and over: "For three decades I have tried to imagine how it might be possible to build a car that can fly under water.

BizBits: sQuba

OK, so the Swiss have invented a car that runs on land and underwater. But did they really have to make it a convertible? It’s called the “sQuba,” and conjures up memories of James Bond’s amphibious Lotus Esprit from “The Spy Who Loved Me.” That fictional vehicle traveled on land and, when chased by bad guys in a helicopter, plunged into the water and became an airtight submarine — complete with “torpedoes” and “depth charges.”

But “Q” isn’t responsible for this one.

The concept car — which unlike Bond’s is not armed — was developed by Swiss designer Rinspeed Inc. and is set to make a splash at the Geneva Auto Show next month.

Company CEO Frank Rinderknecht, a self-professed Bond fan, said he has been waiting 30 years to recreate the car he saw Roger Moore use to drive off of a dock.

Blunt warning to Turkey from Rehn

The intention of the S-G and President Papadopoulos to continue their efforts to speed up the search for a comprehensive Cyprus settlement deserved every support, the Russian FM added.

Two American Congressmen, Michael Bilirakis (Rep.-Florida) and Carolyn Maloney (Dem-New York) issued a joint statement hailing the Annan-Papadopoulos agreement on the resumption of bicommunal discussions.

They said the government proposal for the reopening of Famagusta port under joint administration and under EU auspices, would permit the communities to work together to further enhance trade opportunities.

Applaud

The government has also called for the return of the original Greek Cypriot inhabitants to the adjacent fenced off "ghost" city of Varosha, which has been deserted since coming under the control of the Turkish invasion army in August 1974.
